The practice of acupuncture dates back 1000s of years and originated from China, as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves the placement of delicate needles on certain parts of the body, along what is known as ‘meridian lines’. The idea of acupuncture is to facilitate the flow of energy in the body that may be interrupted, allowing the body to heal.
Acupuncture is well known for its healing benefits. Whole schools and hospitals in China are dedicated to it and is a school of medicine all upon itself. It is known to have remarkable effects upon pain relief, such as back and joint pain. Today, even some physiotherapists may use it as part of the therapeutic and rehabilitative efforts with their clients. What’s less well known is the effect of acupuncture on reducing stress and anxiety. There are certain acupuncture points that are very effective in treating stress and anxiety such as the point of just above the bridge of the nose in between the eyebrows (the Yin Tang point). Digestive complaints are also known to be treated with acupuncture, sometimes given together with chinese herbs.
