What is Massage?

Massage therapy is the gentle application of pressure and manipulation with the hands of the soft tissue of the body, including muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons. It aims to relieve alleviate (acute or chronic) pain in the body that may arise or build up through every day or occupational activities, including arising in the work place, to tired and aching muscles from sports and other recreational activities.

There are many different types of massage – from Swedish, thai, deep tissue to sports massage, each is designed according to the different wishes and condition of the client. For more information on each of these massage styles and more, I recommend reading Very Well’s guide to the Top Types of Massage. In addition, there are more traditional and exotic massages such as ayurvedic massage, which often apply hot oils over the forehead and other parts of the body to result in a very deep state of relaxation.

Massage therapy is particularly useful in alleviating stress, tension and anxiety, particularly after busy periods in the workplace where tension and stiffness can build up in the neck, back and shoulders.  The application of hands on the body together with the oils that are used has a very relaxing and calming effect. Better sleep is also experienced.

Following intense exercise or sports, lactic acid may build up in the muscles resulting in stiffness in the joints. Massage therapy can help alleviate this, restoring the muscles to their orignal suppleness.
